Vijayawada: The NTR district administration achieved another global milestone by creating a world record in making eco-friendly clay Ganesha idols. In a massive community-driven event held in Vijayawada on Tuesday, 7,730 clay idols were crafted in a single day at one venue, surpassing the previous record of 4,464 idols set in Maharashtra.The programme was jointly organised by the NTR District Administration, Vijayawada Municipal Corporation, and the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board. Students from 20 schools, college NSS volunteers, teachers, women’s groups, and govt employees enthusiastically participated, using moulds to shape thousands of idols. The World Book of Records (London) officially certified the achievement, and Dr U. Ileazar, Joint Secretary, South India, presented the certificate to District Collector Dr G. Lakshmi.District in-charge minister for medical and health, Satyakumar Yadav, who attended as chief guest, said the initiative would inspire children and youth to respect the environment. He emphasised that celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi with clay idols helps preserve both tradition and nature. “Plaster of Paris idols pollute water bodies and harm natural resources. This innovative effort shows how culture and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand,” he said.Vijayawada MP Kesineni Sivanath (Chinni) congratulated the participants, highlighting that the city’s seven-star rating in cleanliness was possible due to public cooperation. He urged people to prioritise eco-friendly practices during the festival.Collector Dr Lakshmisha expressed happiness that the record was achieved with wide participation, stating, “This is not just a milestone but a movement towards a greener Ganesh festival.”Other dignitaries, including MLA Bonda Umamaheswara Rao, Pollution Control Board Chairman P. Krishnaiah, and Police Commissioner SP Rajasekhar Babu, also praised the initiative. They stressed reducing chemical colours and plaster idols to protect the Krishna River and create awareness among future generations.
