Google to Build Biggest Data Center in Vizag

Tech giant Google is set to establish its first data center in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, with a massive investment of ₹50,000 crore. The facility will have a capacity of 1 gigawatt, making it the largest hyperscale data center outside the US.

The Union Ministry of Industries and Commerce confirmed the news through Invest India on X. The organisation called Google’s decision a game changer, highlighting that it would help India emerge as a digital hub. All eyes are now on Andhra Pradesh to host this ambitious project.

The Vizag data center will power Google Cloud, Search, YouTube, and AI development. It is expected to boost industries, start-ups, and government services. One major benefit will be improved data security, as Indian user data will now be stored within the country, reducing risks of theft.

To improve global connectivity, Google will set up landing stations for three submarine data cables. With its existing peering and caching servers in Mumbai, integrating underwater cables will be easier. The use of dark fiber will also keep operations cost-effective.

Large-scale cooling is a key requirement for data centers, and Vizag was chosen due to its water resources. On the employment front, IT experts estimate that an investment of ₹2 crore creates one job. Based on this, Google’s ₹50,000 crore investment will generate 25,000 direct jobs and around 50,000 indirect jobs.

Google also plans to run the data center on renewable energy. It will invest ₹20,000 crore in electricity projects, including small hydro power companies, to ensure sustainable supply. Similar models are already in use in the US.

This development not only boosts Andhra Pradesh’s IT landscape but also strengthens India’s position in the global digital economy.
