Flood-Hit Villages In Nizamabad Shifted To Relief Camps

Nizamabad: Nizamabad district has been severely impacted by the heavy floodwaters from River Godavari and its tributaries, Manjeera and Haridra, following four days of relentless rainfall across north Telangana and neighbouring states of Maharashtra and Karnataka. The downpour has led to widespread flooding, particularly in the Bodhan Assembly constituency, causing significant disruption in transportation and daily life.

Approximately, 2,000 people have been relocated from flooded villages to shelter homes in Bodhan town. Areas such as Mandarna, Hangarga, Hunsa, Khajapur, Bhiknelli and Khandgoan were submerged, with road links snapped. In response, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) swiftly intervened, using boats to rescue people and transport them to safer locations.

The Sriramsagar Project (SRSP) backwaters have exacerbated the flooding in Bodhan and surrounding villages. To mitigate the impact, officials released about 6 lakh cusecs of water into the downstream of Godavari.

Bodhan MLA P. Sudarshan Reddy monitored closely with irrigation officials to ensure a coordinated release of water, alleviating some of the flood pressure.

District collector T. Vinay Krishna Reddy, additional collector Ankith and Bodhan sub collector Vikas Mahatho visited the affected areas, overseeing the relief operations, ensuring the provision of essential services, including free meals and temporary shelters for the flood-hit.

The district authorities prioritised the relocation of vulnerable individuals, including pregnant women and patients, to the relief camps. No casualties have been reported in Bodhan division, thanks to the timely intervention and preparedness of the authorities.

The situation is expected to improve in the next three to four days, as the weather has cleared up in Nizamabad, Bodhan and Armoor towns. The government is closely monitoring the flood situation and relief operations are set to continue till the floodwaters fully recede.

A senior official confirmed that the flood victims would stay in the shelters for the next two days. Once the waters subside, they will be allowed to return to their homes. Efforts from the local authorities with the cooperation between Telangana, Maharashtra and Karnataka irrigation officials are expected to help manage the flood situation in the coming days.
