IMD Issues Rain Alert for Telangana Yet Again

Hyderabad: The rain mostly stayed off on Sunday, allowing thousands upon thousands of people to immerse their Ganesha idols and make the tour of famous pandals, including the Bada Ganesh at Khairatabad. Monday is expected to be difficult, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad, issuing a heavy rainfall alert for multiple districts over the next 24 hours.

A developing low-pressure area (LPA) over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify, triggering widespread rainfall, particularly in the northern belt. “Moisture-laden winds are strengthening the system. We anticipate isolated heavy to very heavy spells in districts like Adilabad, Nizamabad, Mancherial, Karimnagar and Jagtial,” said IMD meteorologist K.S. Sridhar.

Hyderabad and its adjoining districts, including Medchal-Malkajgiri, Rangareddy, Medak, Sangareddy and Yadadri-Bhongir, are likely to experience moderate to heavy showers during the period. IMD’s seven-day forecast for Hyderabad predicts light to moderate rain on Sunday and Monday, with sporadic thundershowers until at least September 4.

The day temperature is expected to hover around 26-29°C, with the minimum at 22-23°C. Humidity is set to remain high, ranging between 53 and 87 per cent.

While the IMD warned of intense spells during evening hours, the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS) recorded only very light rainfall across most districts as of 7 pm on Sunday, with Telangana’s average at 1.4 mm. Mulugu, Khammam, and Nirmal recorded the highest cumulative averages at 6.9 mm, 5.1 mm, and 4.3 mm respectively, but none of the districts saw moderate or heavy rain yet. Ten districts, including Warangal, Jogulamba-Gadwal, Wanaparthy and Nagarkurnool, reported no rainfall.

In Hyderabad, scattered showers were reported in select areas around 4 pm, cooling temperatures briefly but lasting no more than 20 minutes. Authorities have urged commuters and residents in low-lying areas to stay alert for possible waterlogging and traffic bottlenecks. Farmers have also been advised to monitor water-sensitive crops. The next 24 hours are expected to be crucial depending on the LPA’s movement towards central India.
