Fuel-Wise Vehicle Sales/Registration Breakdown (2018-2025): State-by-State Insights
- Market share of petrol cars rose post 2020 but has been on a decline since 2022. Currently, it stands at 54.5%
- The market share of diesel cars has declined after 2018. But it has stabilized since 2022; currently, it stands at 18.3%
- Market share of CNG cars has risen exponentially post 2021, and it has surpassed diesel this year. It currently stands at 20.9%
- The market share of EV cars has been rising steadily. It currently stands at 3.8%. 2025 is seeing an extreme gain in EV market share; it has reached 5% this month.
- We don’t have past data (before 2024) on the market share of Strong Hybrid cars because Vahan segregated the reporting last year only. It currently stands at 2.5%.
With country-level analysis understood, let’s move on to the state-wise analysis.
State-level analysis
- Let’s look at which state has the highest market share.
- Maharashtra has been number 1 since 2018. Uttar Pradesh has been 2nd, and Gujarat has been 3rd.
- The biggest gainer has been Haryana, which has jumped from 7th in 2018 to 4th in 2025
- The biggest loser has been Kerala, which has gone from 4th in 2018 to 8th in 2025
- Delhi has also been seeing a constant decline in market share. More people using public transport?
