Hyderabad: A Telugu couple drove down all the way from Surat, about 1,300 kilometre journey, to save their seven-month-old premature baby boy, to Hyderabad. Unable to afford an air-ambulance, the couple chose to travel by road along with their infant weighing just 1.1 kilograms for treatment in Hyderabad, after all their efforts in Surat failed.
With the help of Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Cuddles in Secunderabad, the premature baby, which was suffering from severe sepsis, respiratory distress and multi-organ failure, was transported in special ambulances equipped with life-saving Oxygen.
“Transporting such a low-birthweight, critically ill premature baby on ventilator support over long distances is tough. The journey took 14 to 16 hours. To ensure uninterrupted oxygen supply, two ambulances were used, one carrying the baby and another carrying oxygen cylinders. Along the way, we replenished supplies at multiple points, including once at Nashik,” said Clinical Director of Neonatologist, Dr Babu S Madarkar, who led the infant’s treatment.
Throughout the journey, the baby-faced episodes of breathing difficulty and irregular heart rate. The team care givers inside the ambulance managed to stabilise him. After two-months of intensive care, the infant baby boy weighing 1.9 kgs now, made a remarkable recovery and has been discharged.
