Lokesh Kanagaraj recently opened up about the disappointing response to Coolie. At an event in Chennai, he said he never promised the film would involve time travel or be part of the Lokesh Cinematic Universe, even though many viewers went in expecting that.

He explained that he cannot criticise audiences for having expectations but made it clear he will not create stories only to satisfy them. According to him, if an idea works, it works, and if it does not, he will simply try again.

The bigger issue, however, was not the missing time-travel twist or LCU connection. Coolie struggled because the script was weak. The writing had loopholes, characters lacked depth, and several scenes felt unconvincing. For a filmmaker known for precision, this disappointed fans deeply.

Ironically, Lokesh said he stayed true to his instincts, but the film reflected something else. It seemed weighed down by the pressure of working with Rajinikanth, forcing him to juggle fan service and ambition. In the process, Coolie lost the sharp style usually seen in his work.

Even after this setback, Lokesh is determined to keep experimenting with storytelling. Now, attention is on his next project, with fans speculating whether it will be Kaithi 2 or the much-discussed multi starrer with Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan.
