Hyderabad: The Telangana Employees Joint Action Committee (TEJAC) on Monday passed a unanimous resolution urging the state govt to abolish the contributory pension scheme (CPS) within a year, warning that it would intensify its agitation if the demand is ignored. The meeting, attended by thousands of employees from various govt departments, saw strong calls for the restoration of the old pension scheme (OPS). TEJAC chairman Maram Jagadishwar and secretary general Eluri Srinivas Rao, representing 207 associations, said the fight for OPS would continue until fulfilled. Jagadishwar said that even after 20 years of CPS, introduced on Sept 1, 2004, it has failed to provide security to employees’ families. He criticised the diversion of govt and employee contributions, including 10% of employees’ salaries, into the stock market. “Around ₹450 crore goes to the stock market every month under CPS. This money could be better used for public welfare programmes. Restoring OPS would also boost employee morale and productivity,” he said. Srinivas Rao pointed out that Congress govts in other states have already restored OPS and urged the Revanth Reddy govt to fulfil its own manifesto promise. CPS union president Sthitaprajna extended full support, criticising the govt’s ‘double standards’ in implementing different policies across states. “We will not rest until OPS is achieved,” he said.
