AP assembly monsoon session from Sept 18; govt readies key bills

Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh Assembly’s monsoon session is set to begin on September 18. The state govt has tentatively planned a 10-day sitting, though the final duration will be decided by the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) on the opening day. Governor S Abdul Nazeer has issued a formal notification summoning the session. Both legislative houses will convene at 9 am, while the legislative vouncil will begin at 10 am. The BAC meeting will follow the assembly’s adjournment.Sources indicate that the TDP-led NDA govt will present a comprehensive report on its one-year performance. Several key bills are expected to be tabled, including Repeal of the NALA Act, establishment of 10 medical colleges under the PPP model, universal health card rollout for all citizens, stringent action against false propaganda on social media, Amendments to regularise unauthorised constructions under the Urban Development Authorities Act.The cabinet has already approved regularisation of structures identified up to August 2025.Meanwhile, the YSRCP has announced a boycott of the session, demanding recognition as the principal opposition party. The ruling TDP rejected the proposal, citing the requirement of at least 15% of assembly seats — YSRCP holds only 11, short of the 18 needed. Party chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has approached the High Court seeking a directive to the Speaker.Deputy Speaker Raghu Ramakrishnam Raju warned that YSRCP members, including Jagan, could face disqualification if they skip 60 consecutive days. Speaker Ch Ayyanna Patrudu clarified that attendance will be counted only from the day the session begins formal business — not from the Governor’s address.Previously, the YSRCP govt did not disqualify Naidu when he abstained from the session between 2022-24, and similarly, the TDP govt did not axe YSRCP MLAs when they stayed away from sessions for over two years during Jagan’s padayatra before the 2019 elections.Meanwhile, the AP govt is organising a special session for women legislators across the country in Tirupati from September 14-15. About 300 legislators from different states are expected to attend the meeting.
