The Baaghi film series is a decently successful action film franchise in Bollywood. A total of three films have been released in the series so far with Tiger Shroff, in the lead role. After a gap of about four years, Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment came up with the fourth film in the franchise, Baaghi 4, with Tiger Shroff again. The film was announced in November 2024 and was released in theatres today. Did Tiger Shroff who has been going through a rough phase in the last few years, score a hit film with Baaghi 4? Let’s figure it out with a detailed analysis.
What is it about?
After surviving a deadly train accident, Ronny(Tiger Shroff), starts to behave strangely. He talks about Alisha(Harnaaz Sandhu) and searches for her all the time. Ronny’s brother, Jeetu(Shreyas Talpade) and his doctor, feel that he is suffering from Post-traumatic stress disorder(PTSD) and his hallucinating. Jeetu, the doctor and everyone else try to convince Ronny that Alisha does not exist at all. Is Ronny really hallucinating? Why did Ronny meet with a train accident? What is Ronny’s connection with the menacing, Chacko(Sanjay Dutt)? What is the backstory of Chacko)? Does Alisha really exist? How is Olivia Aka Prathistha(Sonam Bajwa, related to Ronny? Who is Avantika(Harnaaz Sandhu)? Forms the rest of the story.
Performances:
Baaghi 4 is one of those rare films where almost all actors performed very badly. The only saving grace is the performance of Sanjay Dutt in the role of Chacko. He made his towering presence felt and experience count with his menacing performance. Apart from him, almost all other actors, including Tiger Shroff in the role of Ronny, delivered a subpar performance. It was surprising to see an actor of Shreyas Talpade’s calibre, looking clueless. The film’s major drawback is the selection of Harnaaz Sandhu for the crucial roles of Alisha and Avantika. Both roles needed an actress with exceptional acting ability, but Harnaaz Sandhu appeared to be a misfit for the role with her limited acting ability.
Technicalities:
A total of eleven music directors composed the nine songs in the film. Unfortunately, apart from a couple of songs, none of the other seven songs were good. We get to see a song once every ten minutes in the film. It got tedious to watch the songs after a while in the film. The background score by Sanchit Balhara and Ankit Balhara is unexciting. There’s nothing much to talk about other technical departments of the film. Almost every technician, including the director, A. Harsha, delivered a subpar output.
Positives:
1. Backstory Revelation Episode
Negatives:
1. Bad Direction
2. Patience Testing First Half
3. Terrible Performances
4. Excessive Blood & Gore
5. Unnecessary Songs
6. Multiple Lengthy Action Episodes
Analysis:
Usually, a film franchise consists of a series of interconnected films. At times, to cash in on a film’s brand value, filmmakers take the title of a successful film and make multiple parts using the same title, with different stories. More often than not, these franchise films are developed by using original ideas. But, Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment’s ‘Baaghi film series’, follows a different approach. It is a film franchise that consists of remade films. Each of these remake films in the franchise has no relevance to each other apart from sharing the same title and having, Tiger Shroff, in the lead role. The first part of the franchise, Baaghi(2016) is a remake of Telugu film, Varsham(2004), the second part of the franchise, Baaghi 2(2018) is a remake of Telugu film, Kshanam(2016), the third part of the franchise, Baaghi 3(2020) is a remake of Tamil film, Vettai(2012) and now, the fourth part of the franchise, Baaghi 4(2025) is a remake of the Tamil film, Ainthu Ainthu Ainthu(2013).
‘Take an old Telugu or Tamil hit film, add a lot of action episodes and multiple songs, include at least one mandatory action episode where Tiger Shroff, displays his well-toned chiselled body, add a few punch dialogues, and add liberal doses of skin show of the actresses.’, is the formula the makers of the franchise strictly follow. Baaghi 4, followed this formula very religiously. It has at least eight to nine fights(honestly, lost count after a point), nine songs(again lost the count but was able to find the soundtrack list on the film’s Wikipedia page), and two actresses who seem to believe that acting is not about expressions but it is just about displaying the body as much as posdible even in supposedly highly emotional sequences. It is one of those very rare films, where the two lead actresses in the film have one item song each. And then, we have the hero, Tiger Shroff who removes his shirt and starts fighting with the goons once every ten minutes in the film.
The original film, Ainthu Ainthu Ainthu is in fact a decent romantic thriller. It was released twelve years ago and back then, the twists in the film, worked out well with the audience. But, in this era of Netflix and other digital platforms, audiences are used to watching much better thrillers with exciting twists and turns. Expecting the audience to get excited for the twists in Baaghi 2 should be considered foolishness. The first half of the film is an out-and-out bore fest. The proceedings in the first half are badly executed and performed. When compared to the first half, the second half of the film is a bit better. The backstory revelation part is executed well. This twenty-odd-minute episode is the only engaging part in the movie. On top of everything, the film has Upendra Limaye, who appeared as if like he was playing his character in ‘Animal’ yet again. His dialogue delivery and his role characterisation in Baaghi 4 are a poor imitation of his role in Animal. Also, it looked like the director, A. Harsha is heavily inspired by the pre-interval action episode of ‘Animal’. He executed two lengthy episodes with the same look and feel as Animal’s action episode. Overall, Baaghi 2 is a bad remake and certainly doesn’t deserve a watch in theatres. Everything that can go wrong went wrong for the film. Especially, the first half of the film tests your patience. Do yourself a favour by staying away from this unexciting romantic action thriller film.
