Residents from Dammaiguda air grievance at GHMC’s Prajavani

Monday’s Prajavani grievance redressal programme of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) received a representation from the residents from the surrounding areas of the solid waste management facility at Jawahar Nagar, who made a request for supply of water free of cost to the residents suffering from the pollution caused by the legacy waste dump.

The residents from Dammaiguda, under the umbrella of ‘Joint Action Committee (Anti-Jawahar Nagar Dumpyard)’, complained about the water bodies and groundwater getting polluted due to the leachate from the legacy dump, due to which water tankers are supplied against payment. As most of the residents are from the working class, the residents requested for free drinking water supply.

Speaking to the media, G. Swarna Srinivas, a co-convenor of the JAC, said the groundwater for kilometres around the dump yard has become unusable due to high salinity and pollution. The number of people affected is around 18 lakh, she said.

“Residents are being sent water tanker bills for ₹15,000-20,000 per month per household. This is very unfair because the water is unusable due to the existence of the dump. The situation is worsening rather than improving by the day,” Ms. Srinivas shared.

GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan has assured to address the issue, and provide free drinking water, she said.

Meanwhile, the GHMC has received a total 140 complaints from people during the programme, of which 51 were received at the headquarters, and 89 from the six zonal offices.

Of the 51 received at the head office, 25 pertained to the Town Planning wing, and the remaining to Health & Sanitation, Property Tax, Engineering, Finance, Accounts and Land Acquisition.

Two complaints were received through phone-in programme preceding the direct acceptance of grievances.

Secunderabad zone received 28 grievances, Kukatpally – 24, Serilingampally – 15, Charminar – 12 and LB Nagar zone – 10 complaints.
