Vijayawada: As many as 23 residents of New Rajarajeswari Pet were admitted to the new Vijayawada govt general hospital (GGH) with vomiting and diarrhoea following a suspected diarrhoea outbreak in the locality.NTR district medical and health officer (DMHO) Dr M Suhasini confirmed to TOI that eight people were admitted to the GGH on Tuesday night, while two others got admitted on Wednesday morning. All others were admitted to the GGH later in the day. She added that all 23 patients had vomiting and diarrhoea, and added that their condition is stable. They were given IV fluids and kept under medical observation.The DMHO added that water and stool samples were sent to the lab to identify if the drinking water consumed by the affected persons was contaminated. The DMHO further added that the medical and health department set up a special medical camp and attended to the suspected diarrhoea cases in the area.Reportedly, a woman identified as Srirama Nagamani succumbed to diarrhoea in the New RR Pet locality. However, the DMHO denied the reports, stating that the exact reason was yet to be ascertained.Upon learning about the diarrhoea outbreak in the New RR Pet area, municipal administration and urban development (MA&UD) minister P Narayana spoke to Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) commissioner HM Dhyanachandra over the phone and enquired about the reasons that led to the diarrhoea outbreak.The commissioner explained to the minister that the municipal corporation identified that there was no contamination of water, and further drinking water samples were sent to a lab for testing.On the occasion, the MA&UD minister instructed the VMC chief to suspend drinking water supply through pipelines and supply it through tankers until final test sample reports arrived. He further instructed the officials to provide better treatment services to the people admitted to the hospital, as well as to the residents in the New RR Pet area.
