1,500 tax defaulters in Nellore told to appear before Lok Adalat on September 13

Nellore Municipal Corporation (NMC) Commissioner Y.O. Nandan on Friday (September 12, 2025) asked 1,500 tax defaulters to appear before the National Lok Adalat to be held at District High Court on Saturday (September 13, 2025) to pay dues and get the cases dismissed.

Speaking to The Hindu, he said, “Strict action will be taken against the defaulters of property tax, drinking water tax, vacant land tax and trade license tax, as well as the building owners who have undertaken unauthorised constructions or in violation of permits within the NMC limits.”

Already, pre-litigation notices have been issued to the tax defaulters before filing criminal cases against them, the Commissioner said and asked them to make use of this opportunity to waive off the cases.

“The tax payments can be made at the NMC Tax Collection Centre, which was set up in the premises of the District High Court. Those who fail to pay the taxes, including arrears, shall be punished with imprisonment of up to three years,” he warned.

As per the orders of the Supreme Court, the National Lok Adalat will be held every three months at the District Chief Court premises under the auspices of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA).

Legal action will be taken by the DLSA on those who have huge amounts of arrears, not just ordinary defaulters, the Commissioner said.
