The Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) on Wednesday carried out a demolition drive near the Jubilee Bus Station (JBS), removing 16 shops that had allegedly encroached upon defence land.

The encroachments were located along the exit gate of JBS, adjacent to a public toilet.

“The structures, which had been erected on the bed of a nala, were operating in unhygienic conditions and causing obstructions to nala cleaning,” said SCB CEO D. Madhukar Naik.

“Encroachers had taken control of the land for years and were illegally renting it out to shopkeepers, earning huge amounts from the space without any legal sanction. We had received several complaints about this. Despite repeated eviction efforts in the past, the stalls kept reappearing,” he added.

The CEO added that the matter had also been taken to court earlier, but the encroachers had lost their case as the land belonged to the defence authorities.

The demolition, carried out in the morning, cleared the entire stretch of illegal shops. The CEO said the drive was part of its larger effort to remove long-standing encroachments on cantonment land and restore proper civic conditions in the area.
