Global EV sales growth slows to 15% in August; China remains on top

Global EV sales growth slows to 15% in August; China remains on top Global sales of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids slowed to 15% in August, the slowest since January. This was primarily due to a slowdown in the Chinese market. According to market research firm Rho Motion, China accounts for more than half of global EV sales, which include battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. However, EV sales growth in the country slowed to 6% in August from an average of 36% per month in the first half of 2025. Last week, BYD, the world’s largest EV maker, cut its 2025 global sales target by 16%. Other Chinese brands, though, had the best month in terms of sales, with Geely, Xpeng, and Nio gaining market share. Global sales of battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids rose to 1.7 million units in August. China registered sales of 1.1 million vehicles. European sales were up 48% to about 283,453 units, while North American sales rose by 13% to 201,555 units. Other markets of the world recorded a growth of 56% with more than 144,280 vehicles.
