It has been over a decade since Andhra Pradesh was bifurcated, yet the state still lacks a capital. Many blame YSR Congress for the delay as Amaravati has not seen major development despite years of discussions and promises.
After coming to power in 2014, Chandrababu Naidu selected Amaravati as the capital. Between 2019 and 2024, Jagan Mohan Reddy proposed three capitals, which effectively stalled Amaravati. The project had already been delayed earlier due to court cases filed by YSR Congress.
The lack of continuity left Amaravati without progress. Now, YSR Congress appears to be back with a new plan. Sajjala Rama Krishna Reddy stated that Jagan Mohan Reddy will stay in Tadepalli even after 2029 and not shift to Vishakhapatnam.
He also said the opposition spread wrong propaganda about three capitals. According to him, they were only trying to push for decentralised development. He claimed they would build a mega city capital between Vijayawada and Guntur if they win in 2029.
However, after what happened in 2019, critics argue that Jagan Mohan Reddy cannot be trusted on Amaravati. YSR Congress even skipped the Amaravati 2.O program despite being invited, while Sakshi and Blue Media continued to criticise Amaravati.
Whenever it rains, YSR Congress and Sakshi are accused of sharing old and fake videos showing Amaravati submerged. This behaviour makes it difficult for citizens to trust their intentions regarding the capital’s future.
A crucial announcement like this was not made by Jagan Mohan Reddy himself. Instead, it was made by Sajjala Rama Krishna Reddy, who has never held a political position, raising questions about how serious the party is about this promise.
Many view this as an attempt to influence voters in Krishna and Guntur districts ahead of the 2029 elections. If Jagan Mohan Reddy was truly serious, critics believe he would apologise for past actions and then promise proper development.
For now, Amaravati supporters expect that the next time there is heavy rain, YSR Congress and Sakshi will repeat the same propaganda, once again revealing their true intentions about the region.
