Vijayawada battles seasonal diseases amid inadequate sanitation

Vijayawada: While the city is grappling with diarrhoea cases on one hand, on the other hand, cases of flu, viral fever, and other seasonal diseases are soaring, with at least one person in each family suffering from them. Residents complain that the rains, coupled with the mosquito menace and lack of proper sanitation, are aggravating the situation and leading to the spread of seasonal diseases in the city.Residents are swarming the private clinics and hospitals with flu-like symptoms and seasonal diseases over the last week in the city. A 23-year-old woman identified as Roopa succumbed to typhoid in Penuganchiprolu mandal on Monday.NTR district DMHO Dr M Suhasini told TOI that flu and seasonal disease cases are most common at this time of the year. Our (health department) main focus is on containing the spread of vector-borne diseases and ensuring that there are no casualties due to vector-borne diseases, emphasising that the flu and seasonal disease symptoms will reduce within three to five days.District malaria officer Dr Moti Babu said that there is no spike in dengue and malaria cases, with just eight dengue cases reported to date in 2025 compared to 50 cases in 2024, while 33 malaria cases have been reported to date in 2025 compared to 36 cases in 2024.“Jakkampudi Colony in the Vijayawada rural area has higher malaria cases, with 22 out of 33 malaria cases reported this year from Jakkampudi Colony. The health authorities are conducting door-to-door fever surveys to identify individuals with fever symptoms in the colony and taking elaborate sanitation activities such as spraying of indoor residual spray, anti-larvae operation, elimination of mosquito breeding grounds, and others under the Urban Malaria scheme in the city,” the Malaria Officer explained.Meanwhile, the Vijayawada new GGH authorities are witnessing at least 10 new fever patient admissions daily, and the wards are said to be overwhelmed with fever patients. “Patients are turning to GGH only after their symptoms turn severe, which has become a cause for concern for the doctors. Initially, the patients take home medication and continue the course prescribed by a local RMP for two or three days, and after their health condition deteriorates, their family members rush the patient to the govt hospital,” said GGH RSMO Dr Padmavathi.“We are having sleepless nights due to the mosquito menace in our colony. Nearly four people in our building are down with fevers. The sanitation activities by the municipal corporation seem to be not yielding desired results as mosquitoes are wreaking havoc,” Vanajakshi, a resident of Balaji Nagar, said.
