Hyderabad: A 27-year-old businessman approached cybercrime police, claiming he lost 75 lakh after investing in a prominent sports betting app.The complainant said he was randomly added to a Telegram group in June. He was given a username and password and encouraged to invest money in the betting app. After playing for a few days, he tried to withdraw the money, but the app would not allow it. When he contacted customer services, he was told to play more games before he would be permitted to withdraw. He continued to play for three more months.However, later, he was denied access to the application. When he tried to contact customer services, he received a threatening message from someone called Saif. “Nothing can be done against the company, and you will never get the money,” said the app’s representative. Realising he had been duped, the victim approached the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal and lodged a complaint. A case was registered against the company for violation of the Gaming Act and Information Technology Act.
