Migrant workers clash with cops in Suryapet

Hyderabad: Migrant workers from Bihar allegedly clashed with police in Suryapet on Monday after the death of a worker in a cement company. A sub-inspector and three constables were injured when workers pelted stones, damaged vehicles, and attacked the police with sticks.According to reports, Vinod, a 45-year-old from Uttar Pradesh, collapsed and died on Sunday. As it was his weekly off, he stayed in his room. Later, when he stepped out, he felt unwell and collapsed. He was first shifted to a medical facility of the company and then to a hospital in Miryalaguda for better treatment, where the doctors declared him brought dead. The management later shifted his body to his native place in Uttar Pradesh.The issue escalated when workers staged a protest demanding that the cement factory in Palakeedu mandal pay Rs 20 lakh compensation to Vinod’s family. Tension escalated after the management reportedly failed to engage in talks with the workers. They then attacked the factory, damaging furniture and glass panes.When police arrived to bring the situation under control, dozens of workers hurled stones at them. A large number of workers from Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh are employed at the cement factory, where they are reportedly engaged in blasting, extracting stones from mines, and loading cement bags for transportation. The company was also said to be in the process of setting up an additional unit.The situation was brought under control after additional police forces were deployed. The company management reportedly agreed to hold talks with the workers regarding the compensation for the deceased workers’ family. Police officials registered a case and detained some workers.
