Policemen and security personnel were chased and thrashed at the Deccan Cement factory in Palakeedu mandal of Suryapet district on Monday after the death of a worker.

Workers from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh staged a protest demanding compensation for a co-worker’s death and it later turned into a free for all with police being chased and pelted with stones.

Suryapet police clarified that the men involved in the attack were temporary daily wage labourers and not direct employees of Deccan Cement.

On Sunday, the deceased, Vinod, 48, collapsed while washing clothes at the labour quarters, about a kilometre from the factory. He was shifted by his colleagues and supervisor to a private hospital in Miryalaguda and later to the area hospital, where he was declared dead, said the SP of Suryapet police, K. Narasimha.

“There was no suspicion about his death. The company arranged for an ambulance and sent the body to his native place in Uttar Pradesh for the last rites,” said the officer.

However, around 8 a.m. on Monday morning, a group of labourers entered the company premises demanding compensation. Talks were held and management agreed to extend some assistance, but workers pressed for a higher amount.

“Police were alerted around 11 a.m. about the protest. When officers intervened, workers allegedly attacked them with sticks and stones, injuring a sub-inspector and a home guard. A police vehicle was also damaged,” said the SP.

The officer said the situation was brought under control by evening. Cases have been booked against those involved in the violence.
