AP liquor scam: Court orders medical board to examine main accused

Vijayawada: The special judge for SPE and ACB cases-cum-III additional district judge in Vijayawada has directed the superintendent of govt general hospital (GGH) to constitute a medical board to examine Kasireddy Rajashekar Reddy, who has been named as the main accused in the alleged Andhra Pradesh liquor scam. The order came after Kasireddy filed a petition seeking interim medical bail citing serious health concerns.Kasireddy claimed he was experiencing severe medical complications, including suspected malignancy in the growth of bone above his left knee, and severe back pain suggestive of possible renal failure. The petition was filed while his main bail application is pending before the court. Medical documents submitted by the petitioner included an MRI of the left knee joint conducted on Sep 6 at Vijayawada GGH. The report suggested “enchondroma at left distal femur” with further histopathological correlation advised. A urine examination revealed the presence of 7-8 blood cells, which raised concerns of underlying kidney-related complications. Based on the findings, he requested the court to grant him medical bail to undergo specialized treatment outside the jail. The prosecution opposed the plea, arguing that the ailments reported by the accused could be effectively managed either within the prison or by referring him to a govt superspecialty hospital. They maintained that there was no immediate life-threatening risk warranting bail at this stage. After reviewing the medical papers submitted by the accused, the court observed that the available records were insufficient to arrive at a conclusive decision on his health condition. The judge said an independent evaluation was essential to determine the seriousness of the disease, the urgency of treatment, and whether the circumstances justified granting of medical bail. The court directed the superintendent of Vijayawada GGH to form a medical board comprising specialists to conduct a thorough examination of Kasireddy. The board has been instructed to carry out all necessary tests and submit its findings in a sealed cover to the court within 10 days from the date of receipt of the order.Kasireddy, who is named accused No. 1 in the liquor scam that reportedly took place during the previous YSRCP regime in Andhra Pradesh, has been under judicial custody while facing investigation by the CID.
