Osmania University needs safe and conducive academic environment, enhanced hostel support, and regular academic counselling, and its constituent colleges require equitable support structure to excel, said students and research scholars in the hearing organised by Telangana Education Commission (TEC) on Friday.
Several speakers highlighted the insufficiency of current scholarship amounts, which are not in line with rising living and mess expenses. And the most affected are students from rural and underprivileged backgrounds, they said.
According to faculty and staff, their major concern was revision in their remuneration, and for non-teaching contract staff job insecurity and long-standing low wages. Leaders from the Employee’s union appreciated the recent Group IV cadre allocations to the university but requested further reforms.
Suggesting reforms in the administration, chief hostel warden G. Srinivas Rao proposed that fine rice subsidies, currently provided to Gurukul institutions, be extended to university hostels to ease the burden of mess bill. Director, Women’s Hostels, Y. Kalyana Lakshmi, appealed for empathy towards faculty members for handling dual responsibilities as teachers and administrators.
Earlier, in a separate session with university’s academic leadership, Vice-Chancellor Kumar Molugaram presented an overview of the university needs and the roadmap.
