Hyderabad’s iconic landmarks lit up in pink on Tuesday evening to mark the beginning of International Breast Cancer Awareness Month, observed worldwide every October. The initiative seeks to draw attention to breast cancer, which remains the most common cancer affecting women in India.

The Charminar, the Buddha statue at Hussainsagar, the Durgam Cheruvu cable bridge, T-Hub, Prasad’s and KIMS Hospital were among the landmarks that were illuminated. The event was organised by the Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation for the 17th consecutive year.

“Lighting up prominent monuments in pink is one way of sparking curiosity and raising awareness about the importance of early detection. The idea originated in 2000 when the Estée Lauder group illuminated its buildings across the world in pink to mark the start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” said P. Raghu Ram, founder, CEO and Director of the Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation.

Around the world, several globally recognised landmarks such as the White House, the Empire State Building, Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London and the Eiffel Tower also take on a pink hue during October as part of this campaign.
