Investment fraud drives cybercrime surge in Telangana

Hyderabad: With 18,236, Telangana recorded the second-highest number of cybercrime cases in the country in 2023, according to data released on Tuesday by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). Karnataka topped the list with 21,889 cases.Between 2021 and 2023, Telangana witnessed a steady rise in cybercrime cases. Overall crime in the state also went up by 10% in 2023 compared to the previous year. A total of 1.83 lakh cases were registered in 2023, up from 1.65 lakh in 2022. Similarly, crimes against women, as well as incidents of murder and kidnapping, also showed an upward trend. When analysing the motives behind murder, bureau officials revealed that 141 cases were linked to illicit affairs and relationship issues. Cases registered under SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act also rose steadily over the last three years, from 104 in 2021 to 113 in 2022 and further to 134 in 2023. “The rise in cybercrime cases in Telangana over the years is largely due to increased compliance with FIR registration. The majority of these cases are related to investment fraud. The trend in 2024 has been no different, as per state police records,” said a senior Telangana police official.
