Coming into the 2025 season, Byron Young was viewed as one of the most important pieces of the Rams’ pass rush, as he and Jared Verse make a dangerous duo off the edge that can challenge any offensive line. Now in his third season, the 2023 third-round pick has taken another leap forward and has seen himself tied with Brian Burns atop the sack leaderboard through the first four games of the season.
Young has recorded at least one sack in each of the Rams’ first four games this season. The last Ram to accomplish that was Clay Matthews back in 2019, when he opened the year with sacks in five straight games. Young’s ability to win off the line, very similar to Matthews, has given the Rams a difference maker off the edge in every matchup so far.
The history made by Young goes even further. He has managed to record at least a half sack in six consecutive games dating back to last season. Since sacks became an official stat in 1982, the only Ram to put together a longer streak of games with at least a half sack is Leonard Little, who had seven straight in 2001, further proving Young’s rare dominance to begin the 2025 season.
For a Rams defense that knew it was going to have to rely on this defensive line to be an anchor, Young has emerged as one of the early standouts for the defense. His production has put him in historic company, and on a very rare list, and his presence off the edge will be critical as the Rams travel further into the season in hopes of a deep playoff run.
The Rams take on the 49ers in a heated division matchup on Thursday night, which is their first prime-time game and NFC West battle of the season.
