A flood alert has been sounded for people living along the Godavari river course in Bhadrachalam Agency as the water level in the river has risen to 50 feet, just three feet below the danger mark of 53 feet, at Bhadrachalam of Bhadradri Kothagudem district at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
Despite a brief halt in rains in the surrounding catchment areas, the flow in the river in the temple town crossed 12.51 lakh cusecs late on Tuesday evening due to heavy inflows from the upstream dams.
The water level in the Godavari breached the second flood warning mark of 48 feet at 3.30 a.m. on Tuesday, prompting the authorities to issue the second flood warning.
According to sources, vehicular movement on Bhadrachalam-Charla highway was disrupted on Tuesday evening due to flooding of a portion of the approach road near Turubaka bridge in Dummugudem mandal.
Inter-State movement of vehicles was also affected due to flooding of a small stretch of the highway between Bhadrachalam and Chintoor, the key road connecting Telangana’s Bhadrachalam with Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Odisha, sources added.

In a statement, the Sub-Collector cautioned people against bathing, taking a dip or going near the ghats along the river banks as the Godavari is in spate with the water level reaching the 50 feet mark.
