Rs 7,360 Cr Godavari project to fast-track 20 TMC water supply to Hyderabad

Hyderabad: HMWSSB managing director Ashok Reddy has instructed officials to expedite works under the Godavari Drinking Water Supply Scheme Phases II & III.

With a total outlay of Rs 7,360 crore, the project aims to provide 20 TMC of additional water to Hyderabad and rejuvenate the Musi river’s twin reservoirs.

Ghanpur site inspection

Ashok Reddy visited the Ghanpur site, where the 80-million-liter Master Balancing Reservoir and Water Treatment Plants (WTPs) are under construction.

Officials reviewed measures to prevent delays along the 56 km dual pipeline from Ghanpur to Osman Sagar, particularly at challenging zones such as road crossings and tunnel sections.

Infrastructure details

The project includes pump houses, substations, and a 3,000 mm diameter main pipeline from Mallanna Sagar to Ghanpur.

WTPs at Ghanpur and Shameerpet will have a combined capacity of 1,170 MLD, with additional works include pumping mains from Ghanpur to Muttangi and other allied construction activities.

Phased water supply plan

Under Phase 1, 10 TMC of water is already being supplied from the Yellampalli project. Phases II & III will add 20 TMC, of which 17.5 TMC will cater to Hyderabad’s drinking water demand.

The remaining 2.5 TMC will be used for the ecological rejuvenation of the Moosi twin reservoirs. This ensures both urban water security and environmental restoration.

Completion timeline and expected benefits

The project is slated for completion within two years and will provide 300 MGD of water to Hyderabad. The dual benefits include meeting the city’s growing water needs and restoring the Musi River ecosystem.

Project Director TV Sridhar, CGM Mahesh Kumar, and other senior officials were present during the inspection.
