BHPian Dippy recently shared this with other enthusiasts: There was a time when supercars defined ultimate performance and were coveted objects of desire. Don’t get me wrong, they still are. Even today, I aspire to own a Ferrari someday. However, over the years, performance sedans have evolved significantly. Today, they boast more horsepower than many supercars. For example, a Ferrari F8 Tributo produces 710 BHP, while the latest BMW M5 delivers 717 BHP. For this reason, I refer to them as sleeper cars. To the untrained eye, they might seem ordinary, yet they can outperform many supercars. Listing out key points for both:Supercar key points:Complete focus on performance. Light weight too.Looks !!!Having only two seats makes it not really practical.Expensive to buy.Not very usable on a daily basis.Sleeper performance sedan key points:Perfect balance of power and practicality. It can be used as a daily driver and thrashed on the track too.Can seat more than two people.Relatively affordable to buy compared to a supercar.Doesn’t grab eyeballs. No unnecessary attention.Weighs substantially more than an outright supercar.Considering the above points, which one would you pick and why? Would you go all out with a supercar or play the low-key game with a sleeper performance sedan? Here’ what BHPian mgastor2022grey added to the discussion:All day, without a doubt, my vote goes to the Performance Sedan. To me personally, I love 4 doors (exceptions are there, of course!) and the 3 box shape is classy and timeless. My wet dreams are not of 2-door supercars blasting across the highway, but of a luxury cruiser which is capable of putting your pants on fire when you want it to. Sleeper cars excite me much more than supercars. Some of them that I absolutely adore are the F90 BMW M5, Mercedes E53 / E63, Audi RS5, Dodge Charger Hellcat, Maserati Quattroporte and Ghibli, Jaguar XFR-S, Skoda Superb VR6 and Octavia VRS, G80 BMW M3 and the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio. The added practicality + Uber H-O-T styling gets my vote Meanwhile, GTOsaid this regarding the matter:It’s interesting how, in our 20s & 30s, we all dream about supercars…but today, when a few of us are in a position to actually buy one, we don’t. A supercar in India is a Point A -> Point A car and it doesn’t suit my lifestyle at all. I go out with the family & friends a lot (so need a good backseat), I road-trip a lot (so need a good backseat, good boot and good ground clearance) and there are many ~350 (M340i) – 600 BHP Sedans & SUVs (M5, Cayenne Turbo) which are plenty powerful for me (and India). Also, I enjoy brutal acceleration and brutal mid-range power delivery a lot more than top speed. Another problem is that the general driving sense in Mumbai has tanked, due to poor enforcement of traffic rules, yellow-plate delivery scooters reaching customers in “10 minutes” and the proliferation of Uber & Ola cabs. Driving the Thar in the city is peaceful; with the 530d, I have to take a lot more care and people cut me left-right-center. I cannot even imagine driving a supercar in Bombay (sole exception = early Sunday morning). Voted for Sleeper Sedan, although my first choice will be a really fast 8-cylinder Sleeper SUV. I recently did this in a BE 6 – a supercar won’t even reach there (link to full post). This is my kind of fun, no garage queens for me. Lamborghini Urus over a Temerario any which day. Cayenne Turbo over a 911 Turbo any which day:Check out BHPian comments for more insights and information.
