Hyderabad: Tension prevailed for a while at Chaderghat on Saturday night after some persons allegedly threw eggs on Durga idol immersion procession.
The incident happened a little around midnight when a Durga idol was on way for immersion to Hussainsagar, passing through the Akbarbagh locality when the participants in the procession complained of eggs being hurled on the procession.
The organizers stopped the procession and started raising slogans in the locality leading to tension for sometime. Sensing that the situation could go out of hand, senior police officials rushed to the spot along with police reinforcements and cordoned off the locality. No outsiders were allowed to enter the locality, while security in front of the apartment building from where some persons had allegedly thrown an egg was blocked.
To contain any riot, the police higher ups rushed Rapid Action Force and Commissioner’s Task Force teams to the spot.
Around 200 people gathered and raised slogans for some time. The police later persuaded them to leave the locality and allow them to continue their investigation. The procession later moved towards Hussainsagar under full police protection. Following the incident, the police were put on high alert in communally sensitive areas of the city.
S Chaitanya Kumar, DCP (south east), told Telangana Today that the situation is completely peaceful and police deployment continues. “A case is registered at Chaderghat police station. Situation is peaceful, investigation is going on,” said the official.
