BHPian Altroz_guy recently shared this with other enthusiasts: Hello! It’s been a month since I bought my Tata Altroz Racer R1 and till now I have driven 3048kms. Hence, I think I am in a position to share the initial ownership experience of my car.Booking and Delivery ExperienceAt first, there was no plan for me to buy the Altroz Racer model. I was actually going to buy the diesel variant since I mostly drive my car on highways. I booked the facelifted Altroz Diesel Pure variant (base model of diesel) on 18th of June 2025 at Axom Cars Dispur (Guwahati) showroom. The sales person told me that the car would take around 10-15 days to get delivered. I waited for like 20 days and then they told me that the Pure variant is currently not in production and it might take a month to get into the production line since the demand was low for the diesel variants. Then I got to know about the discount on the Racer variants. There was a discount of Rs 2 Lakhs which made this R1 model available for only 9 Lakhs on-road in Guwahati. After that, I quickly changed my mind and booked the Racer R1 variant. I booked the car on 8th July and got it delivered on 24th July. First Long DriveAfter taking the delivery of my car, the very next day (25th July), I drove my car to my hometown (Jorhat) which is 300kms from Guwahati. The car felt very stable on the highway and it can do speeds like 100-120kmph all day effortlessly. The RPM stays at 2100rpm at 100kmph on 6th gear which makes it a great highway machine. It has enough amount of torque that you don’t need a downshift to do overtakes. The suspensions are neither too soft nor too hard. They are perfectly balanced. In the ghat section also the car feels very stable and it gives you confidence to take corners at a good speed. Driving through Tea EstatesCity DriveIn the city, it feels great to drive this car due to its great low-end torque. You don’t even need to use the accelerator. You can pull the car from as low as 15kmph on 3rd gear. The only problem with this car in the city is its mileage. Don’t expect more than 10kmpl in the city.Longest Drive2 days later, again I had to go to Sadiya from Jorhat for some work with my mother and grandmother. It was my longest one-day drive in my Altroz. It was around 650kms (Jorhat-Sadiya-Jorhat). Both my mother and grandmother felt comfortable throughout the trip due to its interior space and its suspension setup. At Dhola-Sadiya BridgePerformanceThe car comes with a 1.2 Revotron turbo petrol engine, same as the Nexon which produces 118bhp and 170Nm of torque and it’s mated with a 6-speed manual transmission. On paper, it looks faster than its competitors but in reality, it is not as fast as them. The main problem is its Traction Control which limits its performance in its first 2 gears due to which its 0-100 timing is not as good as its competitors. But once you get rolling, the car doesn’t feel underpowered and it always wants to go fast. The roll on acceleration is quite nice. Though I want to mention that there is a small delay in the accelerator. You put the foot down but the car takes some time to react to the input. Overall, the car’s performance is great if you drive it normally and don’t care about 0-100 timings.MileageThe mileage of this car is neither good nor bad, it’s just average. Since the day I bought the car, on each refill, I’m calculating its mileage. At the beginning (before 1000kms), the car was returning around 14-15kmpl on highways with AC on at a speed of 80-100kmph. Now it’s giving 17-18kmpl avg on highways. On my recent fuel-up, the car gave an avg of 12.6kmpl (220kms highway + 253kms city = 473kms divided by 11L+26.5L=37.5L), though the MID showed an avg of 14.3kmpl. On each refill, I had noticed that the MID shows 10-12% more mileage than the actual mileage.Handling and ComfortAs I have mentioned above, the car’s handling is best in class, according to me. It is almost neck-to-neck with the Polo. Also, its suspension setup makes the car very comfortable for long trips.PositivesGreat driving dynamicsGood seating spaceGood performanceDecent highway mileageComfortable leather seatsBest in class bootspaceSafest car in segmentBest in class music systemGood rear view cameraAwesome air conditioningNegativesFit and finish could have been betterWeird clutch travel (takes time to get adjusted) and long gear shiftsCannot switch off traction control (results in slow acceleration in the first 2 gears)Poor headlightsEngine noiseRoad noise due to those stock 185/55R16 tyresLow city mileageNo driving modesServicingI had done my first service at 1700kms. It was a general checkup with a few top ups. I had also additionally opted for 3M underbody coating in this service. The total service bill was of 3033INR, including the coating.Future Upgrade PlansRight now, I’m only planning to upgrade my headlight bulb to LED. Later, after a year, I may also change my tyres to 195/55 section tyres. Check out BHPian comments for more insights and information.
