In an amusing early morning interaction, 14-year-old India U-19 cricketer Vaibhav Suryavanshi video called Rajasthan Royals’ Director of High Performance Zubin Bharucha from Brisbane at 5 AM IST on September 22. The conversation took an entertaining turn when Vaibhav tried to explain his concern with the lights in the stadium to a sleepy Bharucha. He pointed his camera at the ground’s floodlights, eagerly showing how they were mounted on four separate poles, unlike the IPL’s single-pole setup.

“This boy drives me crazy. I asked him, ‘Vaibhav, it is pretty early in India, what do you want to show me?’” Bharucha told TimesofIndia.com, describing how the teenager woke him up with an urgent need to discuss the stadium’s lighting. The conversation became increasingly animated as Vaibhav struggled to make his point clear. The teenager moved the camera towards the ground and asked, “Sir, ye light dekha apane? After a while, I realised, ‘Oh, he’s showing me the bloody light over there in Brisbane.’ And he’s telling me, ‘Sir, look at this light ek, do, teen, chaar khamba hai (There are four pillars).’”When Bharucha couldn’t grasp the purpose of the early morning call, Vaibhav finally burst out with frustration, saying “Arey sir, ball nahi dikh raha idhar (I can’t see the ball while playing).” The simple reminder seemed to do the job for the Bihar-born player who has shattered records aplenty this year. In the three Youth ODIs between India U19 and Australia U19, Vaibhav struck 38, 70 and 16 runs as India swept the hosts in Brisbane. In the first Youth Test that followed, Suryavanshi scored a 86-ball 113 run knock as India U19 won by an innings and 58 runs.
