Injured New England Patriots running back Antonio Gibson had encouraging words for Terrell Jennings, who could be set to take on a bigger role in the running back room.
Tests revealed earlier in the week that Gibson had suffered a season-ending ACL injury in the Patriots’ Sunday Night Football game against the Buffalo Bills. That essentially leaves Rhamondre Stevenson and rookie TreVeyon Henderson as the only active running backs on the roster.
Jennings would likely be the top backup option currently on the practice squad, although the team signed Jashaun Corbin on Tuesday. There was a large media presence surrounding Jennings in the locker room on Wednesday, and the second-year running back revealed Gibson told him it was his time now, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss.
Jennings could add another physical presence in the offensive backfield, and he also brings special teams versatility. The former undrafted rookie free agent out of Florida A&M could see plenty of opportunities in an offense that has made use of three running backs in the first five weeks of the season.
