Vijayawada: In the wake of the tragic fire accident in Konaseema district that claimed six lives, the Andhra Pradesh Fire & Disaster Management Authority has issued comprehensive safety guidelines for all firecracker manufacturing units across the state. The new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) aims to ensure the safe manufacture, handling, and storage of fireworks, in compliance with the Explosives Rules, 2008.According to the directive, factories must be single-storey structures built with weak, breakaway walls to safely vent explosions. All production sheds should be located at least 45 metres away from residential areas or public roads. Manufacturing activities are permitted only between 7:30 am and 5:30 pm, with a complete ban on night operations and the use of open flames, smoking, or mobile phones inside the premises. The SOP mandates strict chemical safety protocols, including mixing only the required quantity for one day’s production, using non-sparking tools, and drying fireworks only in open areas with fireproof flooring. Residual chemicals must be disposed of under supervision. For worker protection, all employees must wear protective gear such as fire-resistant clothing, safety goggles, and conductive footwear. The guidelines prohibit the employment of persons below 18 years of age or those physically unfit. Every worker must be covered by life or medical insurance and receive refresher safety training every three months. The department also emphasised fire prevention and emergency preparedness, calling for smoke detectors, sprinklers, clear evacuation routes, and regular fire drills. Officials urged manufacturers to adopt eco-friendly “green” firecrackers that minimise pollution and noise, ensuring a safe and sustainable festive season across Andhra Pradesh.
