The causeway on the Musi river at Moosarambagh might get shut down for traffic for a long time, as the structure has become too dangerous to hold up under the stress caused by continuous stream of vehicular traffic.

The Projects wing of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is understood to have mooted the proposal to shut the road for traffic from either side after the recent flooding, which is yet to get the nod by GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan.

The bridge had been shut down for traffic multiple times this year and previously too, when the causeway was submerged by the river in spate.

A recent inspection by a certified structural engineering team hired by the corporation discovered that the joints of the bridge have eroded making it unsafe for vehicles. A thorough scientific analysis of the structural stability was not possible as the water level was very close to the bridge, and pillars were totally submerged. Nevertheless, the team reportedly recommended closure of the bridge for vehicles.

The high level bridge under construction at the location which was to replace the causeway could take several months for completion. The bridge with two parallel carriageways was sanctioned in 2022, and as of now, only 20% of the work has been completed. While the deadline for the carriageway between Amberpet and Malakpet is March 31, 2026, it could take well up till June next year for the same, say officials. The portion from Malakpet to Amberpet is yet to begin.

With the existing bridge serving as a shortcut between Amberpet, Ramanthapur and Malakpet, its closure is bound to create problems in free flow of traffic. Alternative routes exist via Afzalnagar and Golnaka bridge, and via Malakpet and Kachiguda, but they would be painful to negotiate, especially near the Malakpet road under bridge where traffic gets stuck even during lean hours.

Officials, however, say that there is no other way than shutting down the bridge for commuters, as it could be increasingly dangerous to travel on it in future.
