“Corruption and uniform can never go together” was the blunt message from the new Director General of Police (DGP) of Telangana B. Shivadhar Reddy to all police personnel in the State.
He spoke to them about the principles that must define modern policing. In a strongly worded memo issued to all the officers, the DGP warned that strict disciplinary action would be taken against any police officer found indulging in corrupt practices.
He said that any such misconduct damages the reputation of the entire department and destroys public trust. “Those entrusted with power and responsibility must uphold the highest ethical standards. If they are corrupt, it’s not just a personal failure, it’s a betrayal of the ideals their uniform stands for.”
“Fairness means treating every citizen equally before the law, firmness means enforcing it without fear or favour, friendliness means building trust and empathy in citizens, and professionalism means maintaining competence, integrity, and accountability,” he added.
Calling for a partnership-based approach, Mr. Reddy stressed on the fact that modern policing thrives on community engagement. He asked officers to work closely with citizens, women’s groups, students, residents’ associations and the media, to prevent crime and build trust.
Human touch with digital intelligence
“True policing lies in blending human touch with digital intelligence,” he said, adding that this balance would ensure faster response, better prevention, and greater public confidence.
He also urged officers to show compassion towards the poor and weaker sections. “Give patient hearing to those who travel long distances in search of justice. The poor never forget those who help them in distress,” he said.
He reiterated that police stations must not become venues for settling civil disputes, which are the domain of civil courts. “Any officer found conducting such ‘panchayats’ in police premises would face strict action,” he said.
Ending his message on a note of pride and purpose, the DGP told every officer to wear his or her uniform with humility, be courageous in action, courteous in conduct, and professional in approach. “Our duty is not just to enforce the law, but to earn people’s trust. A uniform is not power, it is a promise of service,” he said.
