BHPian travelog recently shared this with other enthusiasts: After our 47-day epic drive through Lahaul, Spiti, Ladakh, and Kashmir, Radhika and I thought we would take a break. But you know how it is… travellers like us can’t stay still for long. Soon, that itch to hit the road was back and this time, we chose somewhere close, quiet, and unexplored – Andhra Pradesh. It was a Short Escape into Andhra’s Hidden Wonders.A drive to Belum & Billa Surgam Caves & GandikotaSo early morning, September 8th 4:15 a.m., we started from Bengaluru. The roads were empty, the air a bit crisp, and adventure was calling. Andhra, here we come! A word of caution: We knew that there were not so many cafes or restaurants in this area. If you are travelling, please ensure that you carry adequate food along. Our first stop was Belum Caves. This is the second-largest cave system on the Indian subcontinent.Stuffy and scarce air, echoing passages, and walls carved by time itself. The cave system reaches its deepest point 46 m (151 ft) from the entrance level. The floor is of clay, sticky and slippery and the darkness makes it a bit difficult, and in a few places, wade through 5-6 inches of water.Next came Billa Surgam Caves, smaller, but just as magical. And it was raining continuously. Unlike the Belum caves, this is on the ground, not under. Past excavations have yielded tools like scrapers, blades, hammerstones, and spearheads. By evening, we reached Gandikota, the Indian Grand Canyon. As the sun dipped behind the cliffs, the Pennar River shimmered below – breathtaking. The next morning, we explored the old fort, temple, and mosque – silent stories of history. By evening, we were home – tired, dusty, and smiling. A short trip… but a reminder that adventure doesn’t always need the Himalayas… just a weekend, an ALCAZAR and the road ahead! Check out BHPian comments for more insights and information.
