Hyundai confirms next-gen Android-based OS for future cars in India

In addition to confirming investment in developing new cars for the Indian market for the remainder of the decade, Hyundai has also confirmed technological advances. The carmaker has confirmed that from 2027 onwards, its new models for the Indian market will be equipped with the next-generation Android-based infotainment operating system. This new system will arrive in the first quarter of 2027, and will be installed in an upcoming A+ compact utility vehicle, which will likely be the most recent electric vehicle manufactured in India.

Hyundai says the new operating system will change the interior screen layout and there will be a smaller 9.9-inch driver display instead of the 10.25-inch unit, although the touchscreen will be larger at 12.9 inches. Being based on the Android operating system, the new infotainment system will support third-party apps, allowing users to customize the on-board apps as per their choice. Additional features will include over-the-air updates for the Maps software.

The Android-based OS is expected to feature more personalization, access to third-party apps, and quick updates

Hyundai India’s parent company, Hyundai Motor Group, had earlier this year announced the addition of a new ‘Plios’ software brand, with plans to introduce a new Pleos Connect next-gen infotainment system based on Android Automotive OS (AAOS) in the second quarter of 2026. The new software is said to support third-party applications as well as come with AI voice assistant and smartphone-like features, including split-screen display capabilities and multi-window functions.

This could be the same software that may come to the Indian market as well, and Hyundai may make some changes to it to make it more useful for Indian buyers.

Many brands are already offering Android automotive OS-based systems, commonly known as vehicles with ‘Google built-in’. These brands include Volvo, General Motors, Honda, Nissan and Renault. Some of the benefits of AAOS include a more customized experience for vehicle users, easier integration for third-party apps, and faster software updates.
