Telangana Bandh Today: Congress, BJP and BRS Unite in Support of BC Quota Protest (AI-generated image)
Hyderabad: Telangana is witnessing rare political unity today as the Congress, BJP and BRS have all extended support to a state-wide bandh called by the Telangana Backward Class Joint Action Committee (BC JAC), as per reports. The protest, scheduled for October 18, comes in response to the Telangana High Court’s recent decision to halt 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in local body elections, a ruling that has triggered widespread discontent across the state.
A United Front for BC Quota Rights
The Congress party has officially backed the bandh, with Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka calling it a “demonstration against the BJP”. He appealed to Union Ministers G Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay, as well as State BJP President R Ramachander Rao, to take up the issue with the Prime Minister and President, urging them to grant approval for the BC Bill.
The movement has gained significant traction as BC JAC Chairman and BJP MP R Krishnaiah reached out to political parties and civil society groups seeking their support. The backing of both ruling and opposition parties underscores the political importance of the issue, as all sides attempt to project themselves as defenders of the BC community’s rights.
High Court Ruling Sparks Statewide Outcry
The Telangana High Court, on October 9, stayed the state government’s order granting 42% reservation for BCs in local body elections. The verdict has led to frustration among BC communities, who view it as a setback to their representation in governance. Political leaders across the spectrum have since demanded that the government and Centre work together to restore the quota through legislative means.
With large-scale participation expected, Telangana DGP B Shivadhar Reddy has urged citizens to maintain peace during the bandh. He stated that any unlawful activities would be dealt with strictly, emphasising the need for a peaceful demonstration to ensure public safety. The police have also advised residents to plan their travel and essential work accordingly.
