Ilaiyaraaja, the legend of Indian Cinema Music, has been against using his old songs in new movies without his personal permission. He remarked that producers cannot just pay to labels but they have to pay to him, as well. Somehow, producers have been ending up facing law suits from him after using his popular songs.
Mythri Movie Makers are already facing cases from Ilaiyaraaja for using his song in Good Bad Ugly. They are again facing another case for using his song in Dude. Yes, the legend has moved to court against the producers stating that they never took permission to use his song in Dude.
In GBU case, Netflix have replaced the song and continued to stream as Court ordered not to use the song until the issue is settled. Well, Mythri have stated that they have paid copyright permission amount to the respective label for using the song and they do not have to approach Ilaiyaraaja.
Still, the composer has stated that if someone is using his song for commercial purposes, then should take prior permission from him. He even went to Court against SP Balasubramanyam during SPB50 World Tour. The legendary singer remarked that he would have appreciated a call before Ilaiyaraaja went to Court.
They both sorted the issue and after death of SPB, Ilaiyaraaja invited SP Charan to sing Balu’s songs for him at concerts. The composer has been arguing that his songs should not be used without his permission as not just labels but as creator he needs to be paid royalty. He stated that this move will help many composers from exploitation.
Producers have been hinting to directors to not mention Ilaiyaraaja songs in their scripts due to the conditions of the maestro. Some are getting permission but some are trying to fight it out like Mythri, as Ilaiyaraaja has been asking huge amounts to allow his songs usage.
