BHPian ArTigor recently shared this with other enthusiasts: I currently own a Dec 2017 manufactured Tata Tigor Diesel, it has covered 1.07 lakh kilometers in the last 7 years & 9 months. Although the car is fairly in a good condition, I am looking to upgrade to a new car for the following reasons:-Can no more drive a manual due to traffic issues. My Tigor has become loud and throaty, also a lot of minor constant vibrations are felt throughout the cabin. In December my car will complete 8 years, so if at all the 10 year diesel ban comes to effect within Mumbai my resale value goes for a toss.Missing modern touch of goodies like touch screen, cruise control, sunroof (this is an item the family demands). Not that I am unhappy with my Tigor, infact finding a replacement for my Tigor diesel is a tough task. As it has spoilt me for the following:-Superb fuel efficiency, no matter how the car is driven the average I get is between 15-17 kmpl in Mumbai city traffic and 20-22 kmpl on highways for speeds between 90-100 kmph.Planted plush ride quality on highway, easily 2 segments above.Killer of a music system, I have added 2 extra tweeters to the stock 4 speaker setup from harman.Maintenance free and reliable engine.Despite the pro’s as mentioned above, the manual gear, increased engine noise, excessive vibration of the diesel engine are making it a tough decision to retain the car. Additionally, all tyres, suspensions, Clutch set, Water channel under front windshield (due to corrosion) are due for replacement. The car body is starting to get rust bubbles at a few spots. Hence I am of the opinion that this is a right time for changing the car. So with the above aspects I am looking for a car in the 10-11 lakh on road price range. Criteria is:-Needs to be an automatic, AMT/AGS is fine, not interested in the clutchless manual though.A decent NA engineSmooth and silent engineDecent fuel efficiency at least 15 kmpl in city and 19 -20 on highway.Needs to be a petrol, within my budget it is a no brainer.Spacious interior.Premium hatch or CSUV is fine, no more opting for a compact sedan.6 airbags and 5 star safety ratingSunroof (you have to give up when family demands)Touch screen and a good audio setup. My driving requirement isDaily 40-50 kilometersMonthly 1200-2000 kms.70% in city and 30%highway drives.I generally keep my cars stock so there are not going to be any after market additions. Had booked a 3XO diesel some months ago, but cancelled it, as didn’t feel worth spending 15 lakhs on that car, the exterior design is a bit off for me. Test drove the Sonet HTK O Imt I liked it, family didn’t, they felt the suspension setup to be hard! Spoilt by my Tigor’s excellent setup. I loved the interior ambience of Sonet, but then I came to know the turbo petrol Sonet IMT doesn’t score good on Fuel Efficiency, due to all the above considerations dropped it. Nexon somehow feels too cramped Family doesn’t like the Punch Not intersted in the Nissan and Renault. Hyundai not preferred due to low FE. So based on the elimination of options as mentioned above I have finally shortlisted 2 cars:-Fronx Delta plus O AGSAltroz creative S AMTWith fronx I miss on cruise control, 360 camera, sunroof, armrest. What I get is a smooth AMT, and a 4 pot engine, and brilliant FE With Altroz I get everything at 10.5 lakh on road, my only grudge is the 3 pot engine, as my current Tigor diesel too is a 3 pot engine which was smooth for the first 60 k kms, but later has become throaty. Our second car the Alto K 10 also is a 3 pot engine, which also vibrates like hell. So would the Altroz be equally vibey and noisy? Would I get the fuel efficiency clike fronx? Will be taking a test drive of both the cars this weekend, but insights from BHPians will be useful. Here’s what BHPian tp_dominator replied:Your criteria for shortlisting is pretty similar to my criteria too. Since I see sunroof also as a requirement, why not try out the new Maruti Dzire first? I know you don’t want a compact sedan, but what’s the harm in checking it out. Moreover, as per your criteria, if FE is the foremost checkbox to be ticked, don’t look at anything else other than Maruti or its rebadged versions in Toyota (thats what I did too). Hyundai, Renault, Nissan, Tata, Honda etc. wont give a good mileage inside the city traffic. Below is the suggested list you should look at/do a TD of and then choose the one you like the most:- 1. Baleno/Glanza 2. Fronx/Taisor 3. Swift 4. Dzire Among the above, only Dzire has a sunroof and a 5 star safety rating. Or alternatively you could also look at getting a Tigor CNG AMT, would be fuel efficient in the city and you are familiar with the car too. Only downside moving away from Tata is you won’t like the sound system of any other car even one bit and that is one area where you should be careful about. Here’s what BHPian It’s Magic replied:Interestingly, you chose not to consider Hyundai due to its lower fuel efficiency, but shortlisted the Tata Altroz. I hope you’re aware that the Altroz isn’t particularly strong in terms of fuel efficiency either-especially considering you’re looking for a car that delivers at least 15 km/l in the city. Among the options suggested, the Maruti Fronx appears to be a better choice. Yes, you may miss out on a few features, but overall, it offers a well-rounded package. While you’re at the Maruti showroom, I’d also recommend checking out the Maruti Baleno Zeta AGS. It should fit within your budget and meet most of your criteria. As for compact SUVs, it’s quite difficult to find one that ticks all your boxes-sunroof, a good automatic transmission, a smooth naturally aspirated petrol engine, high safety, and spacious interiors-within the 10-11 lakh on-road price range. Here’s what BHPian IshaanIan replied:Expecting the same mileage that your 3 cylinder Diesel manual Tigor gave you in the city, from a petrol automatic with a commendable crash rating is impossible. Be prepared for 10-12kmpl averages. If you want 15kmpl then you need to test drive some manual petrols and pick whichever has the best suited gear ratios for your driving conditions. Basically something that stays in the torque band requiring fewer gear shifts under your driving circumstances. Look out for something that gives you enough shove from 10-50kph without requiring a gear change inbetween. Here’s what BHPian petrolheadkk replied:Why don’t you check Brezza Automatic. It’d be a slight stretch in your budget, but you and family won’t regret in the long run. It has a smooth 1.5L 4 cylinder engine, and Brezza platform is fairly safe. It isn’t any bad when it comes to fuel efficiency. You also get a proper automatic, 6 airbags, and good space for your family. Ideally this should be a good upgrade from your TigorHere’s what BHPian heydj replied:Why not get another Diesel? I doubt EV infrastructure is in place and for your kind of usage petrol will always be a loose loose situation, today it’s e20 in few years it will be e40 and miellage will further drop. With this government one never knows when policy changes, Trump I think looks at us and is becoming like us i.e policy changes every few days. As for diesel even with fuel adulterated like e10 etc miellage will still be more then petrol. Hence get a diesel and with your kind of usage even with 10 year limit, savings in fuel bills would be more then enough. Here’s what BHPian ArTigor replied:Went ahead and booked the Altroz AMT Creative S petrol variant, took multiple test drives of the Altroz DCA as Altroz AMT was not available for test drive, took test drive of Tigor AMT multiple times to get a hold of Tata AMT system and felt comfortable. I was confused between the AMT and DCA, but for my driving style, I noticed that the difference in city is hardly evident. Choose the AMT as a safe and fuel efficient bet. The NVH of the same engine in Altroz and Tigor is way different, Altroz engine is surely muted and on par with the Fronx NVH that I experienced. It was a hard choice between Sonet HTK O IMT and Altroz Creative S AMT, prefered the AMT over IMT as I wanted the clutch and gear free experience, also apart from the higher seating position that Sonet offers, Altroz felt roomier and premium inside. Fronx was rejected by family as a lot of goodies were missing and the interior felt very inferior to the Altroz. Got it at 10 lakh on road got a meagre 15k dealer discount on altroz, insurance is quoted at 25000 rupees which I felt is fair, checked with multiple showrooms in Navi Mumbai and there is no discount or exchange bonus on Altroz. Exchanged my Tigor diesel 2017 Dec manufactured 1.07 lakh km run for 2.7 lakh rupees. I felt I got a fair rate for a 8 year old car, considering people are preferring petrol here in Mumbai. KIA was offering me a lowly sum of 2.3 lakh and 20 thousand exchange bonus. Maruti was offering me 2.75 lakh exchange including exchange bonus for the Fronx. Will keep updated.Check out BHPian comments for more insights and information.
