Hyderabad: Right-wing Hindutva group Bajrang Dal’s activists stormed into a restaurant in Hyderabad that served Kerala food and demanded that it shut down for serving beef, Siasat reported.
The eatery, named Joshyyettan’s Kerala Thattukada, is located near the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) near the Osmania University campus.
EFLU students, who were present there during the incident, told Siasat that there were both Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal, and they demanded that customers leave because they were going to shut the shop because it was serving beef.
Siasat noted that beef is eaten very commonly in Kerala, including Hindus, and beef dishes with Kerala Parotta are a delicacy in the state.
According to the Siasat report, a local also came with the extremist groups and claimed that locals around there thought that the eatery was a veg restaurant, and they visited the eatery often to have tea and snacks. He claimed that the eatery uses one vessel to cook everything, and it lacks a food trade license, which he checked and had lodged a complaint about. The local person also said that the eatery has an item named “BDF” in their menu, which is ‘beef deep fry’. He claimed that many could have ordered and eaten it without knowing what it really was.
Further, Siasat noted that consumption of beef is not prohibited in Telangana and many eateries openly serve beef. The incident near EFLU is a first in Hyderabad. According to the news house, it is not the first time in India that an eatery serving Kerala food has been targeted by the right-wing extremists.
