Hyderabad: Global fast-food giant McDonald’s has strengthened its international presence with the inauguration of its largest overseas Global Capability Centre (GCC) in Hyderabad’s HITEC City, a move expected to boost the regional economy.

The state-of-the-art facility, spread over 1.56 lakh square feet, was formally opened on Wednesday by Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and Minister for IT and Industries Duddilla Sridhar Babu. Designated as McDonald’s Global Hub for Innovation and Enterprise Operations, the centre will focus on technology, data analytics, finance, and other corporate functions critical to the company’s worldwide operations. The GCC is set to directly employ more than 1,200 highly skilled professionals.

Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti said Hyderabad has, over the past two decades, “evolved into the epicentre of Global Capability Centres (GCCs), symbolising trust in local talent and confidence in the city’s governance and faith in our future.” He added, “McDonald’s has always been more than a business. It is a symbol of optimism, of people coming together over a meal, of shared human experiences,” and credited Hyderabad’s enduring strength to the visionary policies of leaders such as Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, PV Narasimha Rao, and Dr Manmohan Singh. He noted how the collaboration befitted a city where technology and empathy walk hand in hand.

Further, he recalled Hyderabad’s growth over the past two decades, remarking how the opening of such global centres connected Chicago to Charminar, Boston to Banjara Hills, and Londonto Lingampally of Hyderabad.”

Minister Sridhar Babu said McDonald’s decision to establish its global office in Hyderabad was “a strong endorsement of the state’s vibrant industrial ecosystem.” He described McDonald’s as a “towering symbol of globalisation” and noted that the economic reforms of 1991 under former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao — liberalisation, privatisation, and globalisation — paved the way for international companies to enter India and transform its economy.

Founded in 1940, McDonald’s serves millions of customers daily in over 100 countries. In India, the company operates through two master franchisees, offering menus tailored to regional tastes. Over the years, McDonald’s has expanded beyond quick service, emphasising technology-driven innovation and sustainable business practices worldwide.

The new centre is expected to generate broader economic benefits, including growth in commercial real estate, services, and logistics, further cementing Hyderabad’s reputation as a leading destination for global business and technology hubs.
