Going down memory lane: My happy ownership tale of two Tata Indicas

Going down memory lane: My happy ownership tale of two Tata Indicas BHPian Neversaygbye recently shared this with other enthusiasts: A thread on old Tata cars merits a mention of the two that we have had close encounters with. The first was a Tata Indica V2 DLS that served us well for close to a decade and over a lakh kms from 2004 to 2013. Despite the horrendous fit and finish and the diesel mill that could be heard from a mile away, the car was robust and comfortable and required very little maintenance. It was reliable and never broke down during the entire ownership period. For its dimensions, it was spacious and the ride quality was great too. A proper mile muncher and it wasn’t at all surprising that there were so many of them running as cabs till about a decade back. Here’s a pic of our V2: Our tryst with Tata motors started with the V2 – the experience was so good that we had no qualms in going for a Tata again when it was time to replace the Indica. However, this time the eventual choice (A Vista D90) faced a shootout with other cars in the segment – you can read about it in my long term ownership review which you can find here. We got the Vista in 2013 and she is still going strong more than 12 years and 145k kms later. An underrated gem in terms of space, ride quality, handling and performance (especially with the Fiat 90bhp engine), with excellent build quality and durability of parts to boot, this is one car that I would not like to part with as long as maintenance costs remain reasonable and parts are easily available (both are a yes at the moment). It is a bit long in the tooth now and the NVH has increased quite a bit (no rattles though) especially on highway drives, so we now have one more Tata to do highway duties, and that is the new kid on the block – the new Safari. So our tryst with Tata cars continues, and if Tata keep improving upon their weaknesses while keeping their strengths intact, there may be more Tata cars in future as well. We shall see.
