The Telangana government launched World Heritage Week celebrations in Hyderabad on Wednesday, with a walk through the Old City. The week-long initiative, which will run until November 25, has been planned to highlight and celebrate the State’s tangible and intangible heritage through curated walks, cultural performances, competitions and a concluding stakeholder round-table.

“The celebrations opened with a heritage walk from Charminar to Chowmohalla Palace for students of government schools. The walk was designed to introduce them to the architectural and historical legacy of the Old City,” said Anuradha Reddy of INTACH.

Telangana Tourism Special Chief Secretary Jayesh Ranjan joined the programme and inaugurated an exhibition showcasing artefacts from recent excavations at Phanigiri (Suryapet district) and Chada (Nalgonda district).

The heritage week celebrations will continue with a talk on museum reforms by A. Nagender Reddy on November 20, followed by a talk on World Heritage and case studies from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh in the national context by Surya Narayana Murthy on November 21. A quiz and essay writing competition on monuments of Telangana will be held for students on November 22, a painting competition and a heritage walk at the Centenary Heritage Museum on November 24 and a valedictory session on November 25.
