Hyderabad: The Telangana high court on Friday directed the registrar of Osmania University to appear before the court. Justice B Vijaysen Reddy passed the order while hearing a contempt case in connection with the university`s decision to cancel the autonomous status and de-affiliation of Hindi Mahavidyalaya at Nallakunta. The court passed the order after the university failed to comply with its earlier orders to consider the institution’s contentions and explanations regarding the notices issued to it. The Hindi Mahavidyalaya, established in 1961, was granted autonomous status in 2012.However, suspecting that the institution had issued marks memos and provisional certificates showing some students as passed despite allegedly failing in the examinations, the university initiated proceedings to cancel the autonomous status granted to the institution. It also cancelled the memos and certificates issued to the ‘failed’ students.Further, the university directed the institution to suspend new admissions for the academic year 2025-26. When the Hindi Mahavidyalaya approached the high court in June 2025, the court directed the university to first hear the institution’s objections and take a decision within ten days. However, the university, without considering the contentions raised by the institution, maintained its decision to cancel the autonomous status. Subsequently, the Mahavidyalaya informed the court that the university unilaterally took the decision despite giving a detailed explanation.Taking note of the fact that around 800 students are enrolled in the Mahavidyalaya, the court once again, in July, directed the university to hear the institution’s contentions. With no response from the university even after four months, a contempt case was filed, said senior counsel Deepak Bhattacharjee, appearing for the Mahavidyalaya. He urged the court to initiate contempt proceedings against the university. Recording the submissions that the university has not been acting on the institution’s explanation, the judge passed the orders.
