Choosing the best 1.3-1.6L diesel car for smooth, relaxed cruising

Choosing the best 1.3-1.6L diesel car for smooth, relaxed cruising BHPian sedanade recently shared this with other enthusiasts: Hello TeamBHP members, I currently own a Baleno petrol from 2018, the car gives ~17kmpl in city and consistent 20+kmpl on highways at sedate driving conditions @80km/h. Beyond that, things start to tighten up, I hear the engine, and i feel it is being pushed. I drive 400 to 500 kms in a week (50+kms in a day and 200+ during weekends), so planning to get a diesel, mainly to cruise at reasonable speeds on the highways. Cars shortlisted: 1) S Cross 1.6 2) Ciaz / Ertiga E15 diesel (Suzuki in-house DDIS225) 3) Corolla (E170) 1.4 1ND-TV 4) City i-DTEC While i like the VW TDI 1.6, not including it because of the maintenance cost involved in the long run, and secondly, i am not after a ‘fun to drive’ car, that expects more rpm for power delivery. I am specifically looking at cars with a small rpm band, but exceptionally useful throughout the entire range, so the car responds to even small throttle input, even in higher gears, and linearly climbs till the mid range (sweet spot). I am not much worried about the top end because i know i will not push it more than ~2500 rpm range. Keep in mind that i have not driven any of the above-listed cars and all my assumptions are based on user reviews. Frankly, i am doubtful if i really need the S-Cross 1.6. The imported engine is praised for its sudden burst of power at a certain rpm. Does that mean the engine, even though equipped with a Variable Turbo, does not linearly accelerate at low rpm levels? Any other 6 speed small diesel from Maruti with VGT that i can consider? How do the 1.6 compare with 1.3 and the in-house 1.5 DDIS225? Corolla is a big, beautiful sedan, widely considered reliable. Does the 1.4 D4D offer better low-end and mid range, than the S Cross 1.6? I am not sure where does the City i-DTEC position, have not spent enough time checking this out. Sticking to Maruti, Toyota and then Honda. Hyundai / Kia not considered at this point, unless they exceed in offering what i am after. Check out BHPian comments for more insights and information.
