6 Subcompact SUVs Set For BIG Upgrades

The Indian sub-4 metre SUV segment is set to heat up with intense competition as six existing models are due for major updates along with several all-new products in the pipeline. Maruti Suzuki will introduce the Fronx and Brezza facelifts in 2026, while the updated Tata Punch will hit roads in the next couple of months. The top-selling Tata Nexon will witness a generational shift in 2027. The popular Mahindra XUV 3XO. and Kia Sonet will also enter in its second generation in the coming years. Here’s a brief on these upcoming subcompact SUVs.

Tata Punch Facelift

The updated Punch will receive noticeable cosmetic changes inspired by the Punch EV. It’s likely to feature a redesigned grille, a tweaked bumper, revised headlamps and DRLs at the front end. The side profile will remain largely unchanged, while the rear section will look refreshing with subtle updates.

Inside, the 2025 Tata Punch facelift might get a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, new steering wheel, a fully digital instrument cluster, a 360 degree camera and wireless charger. The engine setup will consist of include the 1.2L NA petrol and petrol-CNG units.

Maruti Brezza Facelift

A test mule of the 2026 Maruti Brezza facelift was recently caught on camera with a CNG striker. As per reports, the updated lineup is likely to feature an underbody CNG tank as we have seen in the Victoris. This means, customers won’t have to compromise on the boot space when choosing the CNG variant.

A major upgrade is likely to come in the form ADAS suite along with a few additional features. The existing 1.5L NA petrol engine and gearboxes will be carried forward from the current model.

Maruti Fronx Facelift

Maruti Suzuki will also give a major update to the Fronx compact crossover in 2026. The subcompact SUV is likely to come with an ADAS (autonomous driver assistance system) suite. If reports are to be believed, the 2026 Maruti Fronx will mark debut of the brand’s all-new in-house developed strong hybrid powertrain. Suzuki Motor Corporation is developing a new-gen 48V Super Ene-Charge (SEC) hybrid system for lightweight and affordable vehicles.

Details of the next-generation Kia Sonet are not available at the moment. However, the subcompact SUV is expected to feature significantly improved styling and a more upmarket interior, while retaining its existing engine and gearbox options.

New-Gen Tata Nexon

Internally known as ‘Garud’ project, the next-generation Tata Nexon will use a heavily modified version of the its existing platform, and carry a new design language. While the original silhouette and stance will remain intact, it could borrow a few design elements from the Curvv.

With the generation upgrade, the Nexon might receive an ADAS suite along with more advanced features. The existing 1.2L turbo petrol engine will continue to be on offer, while the diesel motor might be discontinued due to the upcoming BS7 emission standards.

New-Gen Mahindra XUV3XO

Mahindra Vision X SUV

The next-generation Mahindra XUV 3XO will draw heavy inspiration from the Vision X concept, which was showcased on August 15, 2025. The all-new model might be designed on Mahindra’s new NU_IQ platform that’s compatible to multiple powertrains. This means, there is a possibility of a hybrid version as well. The existing engines – 111bhp, 1.2L turbo petrol, 131bhp, 1.2L direct injection turbo petrol and 117bhp, 1.5L diesel – are likely to be carried forward.
