Surprise checkpoints greet stunters, street-racers along Hyderabad’s IT corridor roads

Hyderabad: Cyberabad police have adopted a strategy of conducting ‘nakabandi’ (checkpoints) along a few stretches in and around T-Hub in the IT corridor to curb the menace of racing and stunts by motorists. To their surprise, each day of enforcement has resulted in the recovery of Rs 3 lakh to 4 lakh in pending challans from motorists.Groups of youngsters often gather at various locations in the IT corridor or on stretches such as Attapur and Attapur–Shamshabad to perform stunts and hold street races, while their friends film the acts for circulation on social media. Their gatherings on key roads around T-Hub have led to repeated complaints from residents across the city.Joint enforcement is carried out on weekends by local law & order teams and traffic police across five roads around T-Hub. “We observed motorists coming from as far as 16 km to take part in these street races and stunts. Nakabandi is an ongoing exercise to check bikers and other motorists from indulging in racing and stunts,” senior Cyberabad police officials told TOI.The enforcement drives are part of visible policing measures as instructed by Cyberabad police commissioner Avinash Mohanty, who directed all zonal DCPs to regularly conduct nakabandi and patrol isolated stretches.“During enforcement drives near T-Hub and surrounding areas, we frequently come across bikers with huge pending challans. In some cases, the pending challans were as high as Rs 7,000. Apart from checking arrears, we also verify vehicle documents and number plates,” additional DCP (Madhapur) N Uday Reddy said. Each drive typically results in the seizure of an average of 40 vehicles for violations or insufficient documentation.Earlier, sudden gatherings of youngsters on these busy stretches had become a nuisance, especially for employees working night shifts in the IT corridor. Police are now considering increasing the frequency of night-time enforcement on these roads to prevent their misuse. These like-minded groups usually assemble after coordinating through common social media groups.
