The Telangana government has launched a major initiative to modernise Hyderabad’s power infrastructure by approving Rs 4,051 crore for the Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSSPDCL) to replace overhead electricity lines with underground cables across key metropolitan zones.
This decision follows the state cabinet’s recent approval of the underground cabling plan aimed at resolving the persistent congestion of overhead lines in Greater Hyderabad.
According to a government order issued on Saturday (29 November) by Energy Principal Secretary Navin Mittal, the underground cabling project will cover the Banjara Hills, Secunderabad, Hyderabad Central, and Hyderabad South circles.
“In order to improve the quality and reliability of the power supply, TSSPDCL conceptualised the programme for undergrounding the existing distribution network. This will attract industries and other investments into the metro zone, Hyderabad area, thereby improving economic growth,” the GO stated.
The project will convert all 33 kV, 11 kV, and LT overhead lines along major roads into underground networks, while LT lines in narrow lanes will be shifted to AB cables. Wherever feasible, all lines will be installed in a single trench to optimize both cost and technical efficiency.
In a related development, the government also issued a GO allowing the phased procurement of 3,000 MW of solar power through competitive bidding.
The Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation will oversee the process, following the recommendations of the Telangana Green Power Procurement Coordination Committee.
The initiative aims to strengthen the state’s power grid with reliable, cost-effective renewable energy and advance Telangana’s carbon reduction objectives.
The GO outlines a phased procurement schedule—1,000 MW by June 2026, another 1,000 MW by December 2026, and the final 1,000 MW by June 2027, via inter-state or intra-state transmission routes deemed technically and commercially optimal.
