Samsung explains how it designed the Galaxy Z TriFold to be durable

The Galaxy Z TriFold might be Samsung’s first tri-folding phone but it doesn’t feel like a prototype at all. The company has revealed the steps it took to ensure the phone feels as durable and luxurious as a nearly $2,500 device should. Its new video shows the phone’s assembly process and durability testing.

The phone’s frames are joined together using two Armor FlexHinges using a highly sophisticated automated process. Then, a new bonding process is used to make the frame surface even, and its evenness is cross-verified using laser scanning. A 10-inch foldable OLED panel is then attached to the frame and pressed for a set amount of time to make the whole structure thinner and stronger.

You can watch the assembly and testing video of the Galaxy Z TriFold below.

The same pressing method is used while attaching the backplate to the phone’s frame. It improves the overall durability of the device. 3D laser and CT scanning processes are is used to check if all the phone’s parts have been fitted together perfectly.

Robots then verify if the phone is opening at a perfect 180-degree angle. While unfolding the phone, a CT scan process checks the performance of the hinges and the form of the foldable display. Another set of robotic arms then folds and unfolds the phone to test its durability.

Samsung says the Galaxy Z TriFold can withstand at least 200,000 folds and unfolds, which is equivalent to folding and unfolding the device 100 times every day for five years. This is similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 7. It would have been even better if Samsung tested the Galaxy Z TriFold for up to 500,000 folds, similar to some of its Chinese rivals.

All the cameras are thoroughly checked for focus and lens performance, while its display panels are checked for color accuracy, brightness, and multitouch performance. The device’s cellular network and wireless performance are also checked under various conditions and environments.

Similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 7, the Galaxy Z TriFold is IP48 rated for dust and water resistance. It can be immersed in water for up to 5 feet and up to 30 minutes without any damage. Looking at all these things, it appears that the Galaxy Z TriFold is as durable as the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and other foldable phones in the market.
